Hi!
My name is Anna Rigley; I am 25 years old and have just completed an Education Studies degree at the University of Derby. The course covered Worldwide Education Systems and I visited a Teacher Training College and Primary School in Holland. Other subjects covered included Child Development, Learner Differences & Needs, Learning & Motivation, Construction of the Curriculum and Managing & Understanding behaviour. I believe that the course has given me the building blocks required to develop skills needed to work effectively with children. My varying experiences have made me aware of the impact social deprivation has on children and schools. I now understand the importance of reflective practice and the different teaching styles. The knowledge and skills I have gained have also helped me to develop my personal qualities. I am patient, friendly, caring, and empathetic and try to view people holistically. In July 2011 I volunteered for one month in a school in South Africa, working with children with severe learning difficulties and HIV. On reflection the both course and practical experience gave me the confidence, motivation and determination to volunteer abroad. In order to raise funds for the trip and a donation for the school I organised fundraising events and publicised the event through public speaking. Whilst abroad and on the course I have had to be resilient, assertive, reliable, organised and a creative thinker when planning and running activities. These skills link with my interests and hobbies, as I enjoy travelling, arts and crafts and socialising with different people.
My ambition has always been to support children in a learning environment and I feel that I have developed and honed the skills required. During placements, staff always viewed me professionally and children respond well to me. I believe the opportunity to continue my professional development will enable me to unlock my true potential. It is my personal belief that every child and adult deserves an education, as without education, freedom is limited.
I would love to work with children teaching English, and from my experience in South Africa, I believe the TEFL course is the key to enable me to see and explore the world.
