Conjunctions

Hi!

I am doing the Grammar Awareness section of the 120hour online course and had to name each part of the sentence 'When he was twelve Daniel Radcliffe starred in Harry Potter and achieved instane fame'...

You have to name each word from a list of words e.g. Preposition, abstract noun, main verb, auxillary verb, conjunction, etc.

The word I had trouble with was the first - 'When'. The answer is conjunction and I'm just wondering if anyone can explain how, as conjunction is described as <font face="Calibri" size="3" color="#365f92"><font face="Calibri" size="3" color="#365f92"><font face="Calibri" size="3" color="#365f92">

"A

</font></font></font><font face="Calibri" size="3" color="#365f92"><font face="Calibri" size="3" color="#365f92">

</font></font><font face="Calibri" size="3" color="#365f92">

</font>

conjunction is a 'joining word' linking words or parts of sentences together. E.g. I left the party early because I was tired. I’ll phone you when I get home."

I wouldn't have thought it could be the first word in a sentence. But any help would be apreciated! :)

THANKYOU, THANKYOU, THANKYOU. That was a great explanantion. I missed the part about how it could be the first word and the comma is in the middle. I'll never forget what a conjunction is now. Thanks for taking the time to help me :)

Conjunctions are used to join to 2 sentences or 'thoughts' to form one...sometimes you have one complete thought and one partial thought (the partial thought cant work without the completed thought BUT the completed thought can work alone)

For example - (one complete thought, one seperate thought)

1) I'll phone you. (this can be a stand alone sentence and makes perfect sense on its own)

2) I get home.  (this doesnt work on its on...this is only a partial thought!)

to connect the 2 together we can use 'when'! - I'll phone you WHEN I get home.

Conjuctions can also be used at the start of the sentence - When I get home, I'll phone you. (notice the comma in the middle!)

For example (2 seperate thoughts/sentences)

1) I like chocolate.

2) I don't sushi.

(both are complete thoughts and work alone) - in this case we can use BUT

I like chocolate BUT I don't like sushi.  - when they are both complete thoughts, usually the conjuction goes in the middle but you can change the 'thoughts' around.

In short - anything that joins 2 sentences or thoughts together is a conjunction.

(everything in bold is used as a conjunction - sometimes it is one word - sometimes it is many... sometimes you can change the conjunction to change the meaning!)
