Nerves part 1 (there will no doubt be a part two)

Ok, for the first time in a long time, I have actually thought seriously about heading off for a year, leaving everything I know behind me, and jet off alone to a foreign country with no word of the language, and at that thought alone I was slightly scared. Japan was always my port of call; for some odd reason it appealed to me. But i made the MASSIVE mistake of googling Japanese food about 10 minutes ago (and I dont mean the stuff you get in your local restaurant)...... oh dear god..... now Im a fussy eater as it is, but I am pretty convinced that I will STARVE in Japan if i go over. That thought has just places the biggerst fear in me. Suddenly this seems very real, and the feeling of adventure and seeing the world and having this amazing time away from my family and friends has been blown to shit. I just feel terrified... I mean who am I kidding. I cant even stomach most of the chinese food in my local, I just dont like it. And I wanna go to Japan!!! Oh I have lost my little mind.

I always wanted to do this. I heard about it when I was 17 and preparing for my final school exams and I thought it was the most amazing thing in the world. I even considered abandoning college and just heading off. But I waited my 3 years, and Im 20 now and now that its coming into my final year, preperations are starting to be discussed and looked into and googled. Suddenly reality has hit. Im such a home bird, always have bee, although i have no idea why, my family drive me insane with a capital I. I'm suddenly scared of it all. I'm afraid of the constant nattering of people in a language I have no concept of giving me a headache and generally annoying me, I'm afraid of not being able to handle the weather, of not knowing how to do the simple things like read a packet of food, and most of all Im terrified of not being able to get used to the food, of just wanting a pizza. I dont even know if they eat pizza in Japan!!!

Oh dear .... nerves have kicked in with a serious amount of energy ....

I can reassure you that thye do have pizza in Japan, it can be expensive if you seek out a Pizza Hut or the like but you can find frozen pizza in most stores.

That said, Japanese food is really delicious. I'm not a fussy eater but seriously if you give it a try you'll probably be surprised how much you actually like. We're just so used to our food being packaged all nicely in the West and not looking like the animal it was originally that we tend to freak out about food that's chopped up in front of us. :)

Hi Amy,

Yes the Japanese eat pizza and the supermarkets sell the frozen ones - well in Kobe they did anyway.  There are aslo foregin food stores which basically sells food from all over the world, however you will pay alot for that.  I'm vegetarian and even I didn't starve in Japan! You can always get your family to send you a food parcels.

Japan is a great country to visit and the people are really nice and friendly.

awww thanks everyone :-) ye you're all right, if its only the food I',  worried about (which is mainly is) I dont really have much to complain about. Thanks everyone!

I can relate somewhat, as far as not liking their food & with wanting to do it and being very intrigued at the idea. I say do it! You only live once, I'm sure you will LOVE it! It will be a great experience and like the guy below said, try new things. Don't be scared, be courageous. Life is about new experiences and if food is the only thing you have to worry about, then...you have no issue at all.

Hey! I went to Japan on a holiday two years ago and i was really worried about the food since i am not a fan of sushi. But i can assure you that i had sushi only once and everything else i ate was delicious! The food was absolutely amazing, be brave and try new things i have no doubt you will fall in love with it! And if that all fails in Tokyo and Osaka i found Mcdonalds and KFC so you cant really go wrong, plus you could always cook your own food if all else fails.

It is scary i know how you feel its starting to sink in for me as i am going in March/April 2012 but this is an adventure of a lifetime, you cannot go wrong. And if you dont like it your family and friends will be there waiting for you when you come back.

p.s I had a fantastic pizza in Tokyo :-) Hope that helps!
