My first solo class next week...

Next week Erika, the tutor at the Sikh resource Centre will be away so I will have the ladies to myself for the first time.  I don't feel too nervous because they're really good fun.  One of the ladies has a bit of a speech problem but it's really worth the effort of listening to her because she cracks really funny jokes all the time.

This week we were doing 'My daily routine', really a reading exercise designed to lead on to asking and telling the time.  We didn't finish the lesson because some of the ladies were late which makes it hard to keep the different levels occupied even though there's two of us because you're half way through putting stuff on the board and then have to incorporate a new person. It's chaotic because I live where all the Asian shops are so they all want to go shopping.

Anyway, makes a good context for talking about time!  Better start my first proper lesson plan...

I've only been doing it a few weeks, as a volunteer.  Today I started at the Old Co-Op on Chelsea Rd, where the class id quite different.  Most of the students can read and write.  They are all adults but a good mix of African, Asian and Polish, pretty much a cross section of Easton, I guess, almost certainly one of the most multicultural places in the UK.  I can't remember how many languages are spoken round here but it's a staggering amount.

This class is two hours and I just hang around and help, as she doesn't need as much support as in the other group.  I've been really enjoying it; sometimes there's this moment when the penny drops and it's really satisfying.

Hey Alix :)

I didn't know you did this! That will surely do you good on your CV and when you are looking for work! Sounds like hard work! Yet fun and fulfilling! :)
