volunteering in UK

Just been round some local places that teach TESOL to immigrants and refugees.  There are three locally, that is Easton, Bristol, where I live.  There may be more if anyone knows of some I've missed...?

The first one, 'Silai for skills' is aimed at training women in sewing and such like but they do TESOL classes. I haven't heard back from them though, maybe I'll drop in and talk.

The one in my street, the Sikh resource centre have invited me to go along on Wednesdays and help out, although I haven't actually met the tutors yet.  That's tomorrow, so I feel quite excited, but don't know what to expect.

The third one, 'The Old Co-op' is run by the college and requires a CRB check which they are currently applying for. They seemed fairly positive about finding me something to do, but not proper teaching.

I reckon if I can only sit in on classes it'll give insights into applying theory in real life, so I hope to gain something as well as helping the community.  I don't want to let it all slip from my mind between now and my first job interview.  (That might be ages as I haven't got a degree).

Who knows, I might learn some Somalian whilst I'm at it!

Alix,

Meant to say also - have you thought about doing a summer camp at all? You might want to check out CES: www.embassyces.com or for the jobs section:  http://www.summerjobs4u.co.uk/EmbassyCES.htm

Good luck!

Great idea!  Good Luck for tomorrow.  I also want to put what I have learnt into practice as soon as possible. I am in the process of looking for voluntary work.  I live in The Netherlands and all the high schools want volunteer native speakers, especially the grammar schools as their students do Cambridge English. I have already been asked by two schools to come and have a chat with them.  My ‘problem’ is that I work as a Freelance Translator and I am inundated with work at the moment.  I’m hoping for some breathing space next week so I can focus on my ‘TEFL career’!

Hey Alix,

This seems like a really great idea to keep your TEFL skills on the burner - make sure you keep us updated with how you get on!

Good luck!
