job aquired!

After a whole load of worry, I've got the job I wanted!   I'll be near, but not in, Sevilla and working for a respected academy with lots of training opportunities and great facilities.  I feel great about it at the moment, I'm trying not to have expectations too high; I'm prone to unwarranted optimism!  Anyway, fingers crossed.....

THAT time again!

Well, after a difficult year it is once again the time to start looking for another job.  I finally decided to hand in my notice last week and now feel a mixture of release and anxiety as I left school at 16 with only O-levels and therefore am severely out-competed in Spain at the moment. I must say that despite my last post, there are many good things about this place and I just happened...

grammar dispute! please help

Now, I, and everyone else, I hope, knows that "If I were you...." is better than "If I was you...." although both are acceptable.  My problem is with "If it were me....".   I don't like it, it sounds completely wrong to me, but all my colleagues insist that the same rule applies and that "If it was me........" is not really correct. I suppose I should just accept being out-voted on it!  But I'm a...

hard times and learning curves

I haven't written apost on here for ages as I've been feeling too negative and uninspired.  Now I think it's time to shake myself and try to look on recent experiences as a learning curve, otherwise I'll just have to write off nearly a year of my life as a bad memory which is useless. So, I came to Andalucia with 3 years of teaching behind me feeling incredibly positive and confident.  I'd had, on...

What are you like?

Do you find that people are always asking you the same questions?  Where are you from? How long have you been in my country? Why are you here? Do you like it? Will you stay long?  Don't you miss your cullture? I often wonder if TEFL attracts a certain kind of person, or is there as much variety in this profession as any other?  That's really what my new blog is about.  I would be...

Pain and language

This week has been, for me, an abject lesson in the stupidity of being slow about learning Spanish.   There are excuses, of course!!   1. It's a bit tricky taking in a new language when you have to learn your own all over again in detail you never imagined: "if the relative pronoun refers to the object of the defining relative clause, it can be omitted", "we use the third conditional for hypothetical situations...

passion and politics

Well, Spain is truly up in arms at the moment, or so it seems.. This week we've had a massive general strike and the Easter celebrations all together.  Spain still being very much a catholic country, Easter, or Semana Santa, is a big deal for the religious.  There are many parades, people carrying icons of Jesus and Mary, representations of the coffin of Jesus and men volunteering to be tied to a cross, although the...

A useful site

Hi all! I just wanted to share some great advice for new teachers from my favourite free teacher resource site.  I highly recommend Busy Teacher, it's very professional and helpful, you can dowload worksheets and lesson plans aswell as find good advice and sign up for their newsletter.  You can also upload worksheets you have made yourself in return for what you take, although this is optional, and it will be moderated before it's...
