About Me

After spending almost 40 years of my life in the Accounting Profession, the last 20 in University Financial Systems implementation and management (does PeopleSoft ring any bells?), I retired from the full time work force in July 2007 - and my wife quite happily continues to work in office administration.
As a consequence of my former career, my wife and I have travelled extensively in the USA and Europe, and have developed long term interests in discovering different countries and cultures. We head off to some interesting part of the world whenever home commitments and finances allow. With a Math Teacher son residing in the UK, our most recent travels involved a cruise from Budapest to Amsterdam, a guided tour of the Netherlands and Belgium, with emphasis on Arnhem and Nijmegen ("A Bridge too Far"), and a return cruise from Athens to Singapore, via Turkey (Gallipoli and Ephesus), Egypt and the pyramids, Colombo, Phuket, and Kuala Lumpur.  The trip also included a visit to Spain, and volunteer TEFL teaching with Vaughantown, in the small village of Barco de Avila (Gredos).
With a life long interest in travel and experiencing different cultures, my wife and I completed the 100 Hr i-to-i Course in 2008, with every intent of teaching in Slovakia in 2009/10.  But then the GFC arrived, contracts were difficult to obtain...and I managed to contract whooping cough at the inappropriate moment.  But we are still very keen to extend our experience with both TEFL and Travel...possibly to SE Asis this time...and definitely a return to Spain for more volunteering.
When not surfing the internet, attending to domestic chores, or cooking, my passion is radio controlled miniature aircraft - building, flying, fixing...in that order. The aircraft range from small to large, and are either electric or ICE powered. In the summer months, Slope Soaring is both a challenging and relaxing pass-time.

What a life! :D

Hi Alan,

Welcome to Chalkboard! Your travels sounds amazing - and it's great that you've already done some teaching at Vaughn in Spain. If SE Asia is what you and your wife are after you should get in touch with these people who are all out teaching at the minute and should be able to give you some advice about job hunting etc:
