Hey, I'm Adam, 29 and currently trying to decide where I want to be in the near future. I'm (quite) recently single and taking the opportunity to have a re-think about where I want to spend my life.
Just enrolled in the 120 hour course so I should be ready to apply. Looking at South Korea at the moment. If applied for EPIK Aug 2012, so if you're also applying, get in touch.
I enjoy socialising, comedy, having a good laugh, football, skiing and generally being a nice person :)It would be great to get to know people of similar mindset on here so we can hook up on the other side of the world :)

Umm, I would shop around. I ended up getting my degree notarized by my aunt, who's a lawyer, but was quoted over £60 per document. However, I've heard of people getting it notarized for £5.
Hey, sorry it's taken me a little while to get back to you! I am glad to hear you are coming out here :D Yeah, sometimes you just have to go for it! I understand why you've postponed the CELTA! I hope that you get to be somewhere cool with EPIK. If you are anywhere near Daejeon, let me know and we should meet up :D What are you up to till the summer? Have you done all your paperwork yet?
Hi again! sorry about the late reply- have been revising for my TEFL exam and applying for jobs home and abroad constantly! :) Coachsurfing sounds awesome, and i definitely would like to make as many friends as i can out in Korea before i get out there, which is not going so well! i think im going to have to wait until August for CRC check to come through and good placement in Ulsan hopefully with Footrpints, Ive been using Daves ESL site alot aswel, check it out :)
Hi! Yes, I think it definitely would! There are a lot of people out here who have learnt on the job (including my supervisor at my current job). They are often great teachers, but a CELTA really does help (well, my Cert TESOL did anyways!), especially as there isn't all that much training. I was like you when I was looking for a job! I learnt a lot more about Korea than about teaching there before I went. I would recommend starting to look for jobs around June if you want to go out in September. Don't worry about not having the course in hand yet, just tell them you will get it (and you will have plenty of time once you have gotten it as well). I think I had all my documents ready by mid-October and my TEFL course in hand, and I was in Korea by the end of November. I know some people who have moved even quicker.
Oh, also only certain recruiters recruit for public schools, and www.teachkoreans.com isn't one of them.
Yes, if you want a public school job, it is August that you need to go out there, however, there are plenty of nice hagwon (private school) jobs. There are a lot of different benefits to both. I think I am happier in a hagwon than I would have been in a public school. Basically in a hagwon you get your own small classes and you are responsible for them. A lot of people in public schools have likened themselves to tape recorders. However, the benefits for public schools are sometimes marginally better (you start off on the same salary, but public school gives a bigger increment if you stay in Korea longer and it gives you bonuses for things like travelling between schools). You get to see the kids less in a public school, you are often running between classes, especially if you are in a big school (you could be teaching each kid for about mins a week, compared to in a hagwon, where the shortest time you'll ever have with a kid is pretty much x minute classes). Also, my middle schoolers told me once that school is for sleeping, hagwon is for learning. Now, obviously, I'm biased. I love my job, but I suggest you do some serious research into which is better for you. At the moment public school foreigners are decreasing, which will mean that hagwons are increasing, and this is relatively new. If you want Busan you are going to have some seriously stiff competition (although with the CELTA you are doing and your experience you will have a good chance).
Cool, they might not have all that many openings there, as they mostly have stuff in the Cheongju area. Always worth asking though :)
Hey! I saw you said you were going to get in touch with www.teachkoreans.com. That's awesome, as it probably means you won't be too far from me (although they do have some jobs in other cities). If you do end up in Cheongju, let me know, because I go there lots! Also, it is hardly very far from where I am now. Also, let James know you were sent by me :) I don’t think it gets me anything anymore, but I live in hope!
Haha, more experienced then; I'm actually glad I'm doing it now rather than when I was fresh out of uni - I think I'll appreciate it more! I totally hear you about being here though - Come to England; work in a job you don't really care about for longer hours and more years so that you can buy a smaller house for a higher price. Woo! It's very depressing. I think I'll keep travelling till I find somewhere that feels like home. :)
