TEFL Dos & Don’ts

So you’re thinking about having a TEFL adventure in 2010? Great! TEFL’s an amazing way to travel, have a rewarding experience and immerse yourself in new cultures. But, there are certain dos and don’ts for those thinking about getting TEFL certified and heading abroad…

Do

There are hundreds of course options, types and providers out there – sometimes it can feel like a bit of a minefield! To make sure you don’t end up with a duff TEFL certificate, ensure your course provider is accredited, can provide you with testimonials from former tutees and that the certificate is internationally recognised.

It might go without saying, but doing a TEFL course is just like doing any other course – it takes time and effort to complete. Just signing your name on the dotted line is not an instant ticket to your dream job abroad – it takes a teensy bit more work than that, but believe us, it’s worth it in the end!

Listening to sales pitches can get a bit exhausting sometimes, so try and network within the TEFL community to see what experienced EFL teachers recommend. Try posting a message to people on i-to-i’s Facebook page or on forums like www.eslcafe.com and www.tefl.net.

Don't

In many countries you can simply turn up and find work without a TEFL certificate. However, to get your hands on the more lucrative contracts with better working conditions, a TEFL certificate is a must. Plus, it’ll give you the skills and confidence you need to do a great job!

We’ve got good news – despite popular belief, you don’t need teaching experience, a degree or knowledge of a foreign language to TEFL. As long as you’re a fluent English speaker, there are plenty of opportunities out there for you!

Deciding to leave everything behind and teach English abroad is a massive decision and one that shouldn’t be taken lightly. But the rewards you’ll get from it are huge: new friends, new experiences and a whole lifetime worth of stories to tell your mates back home. So take a deep breath, and just go for it.
