- Summary
- As in other Middle East countries, employers expect their teachers to have lots of qualifications.
- Main TEFL regions
- Sana'a, Aden
- Types of teaching
- In-company: General English, Business English, English for Specific Purposes
English medium schools: General English, English for Younger Learners
University language departments: General English - Accommodation
- This is usually provided by your employer, or they’ll add a housing allowance to your salary.
- Flight reimbursement
- You’ll usually get free flights or a cash bonus at the end of a long contract.
- Salary
- US$1000-$1,600 per month, which is a fair bit lower than other Middle Eastern countries. Pay is commensurate with a teacher's qualifications and experience.
- Taxes
- No income tax!
- Cost of living
- Yemen isn’t as rich as its neighbours, so costs are lower. Food and transport are about half the price of the USA, while clothing is about a third of the price. However, getting a phone and internet connection are much more expensive.
- Potential to save money
- If you avoid spending too much – which isn’t that difficult given the lack of western-style entertainment – you should be able to save a decent amount of money each month.
- How much TEFL training is recommended?
- Realistically, you need to have a Maters Degree in TEFL to teach in a decent school or university. Smaller schools may employ you with just a BA and a TEFL certificate, but they’re probably not the kind of places where you’d want to work.
- Common teaching conditions
- Teaching conditions are much the same as elsewhere in the Middle East: lots of bureaucracy and the odd cultural clash, but dedicated students and plenty of vacation.
