Salary
Newly-qualified teachers can expect to earn €700-€1,000 per month, although this can be supplemented with private tuition.

At €700 per month, expect to pay 13% tax. On a salary of €1,000 per month, it’ll be more like 16%.
Cost of living
The cost of living here is slightly cheaper than other western European countries; with a beer costing about €1 and a liter of milk (2 pints) just €0.40.
Potential to save money
Realistically, you’re unlikely to save any money.
How much TEFL training is recommended?
As the market here is quite mature, a TEFL certificate is the minimum expected from the vast majority of employers. i-to-i offers a range of internationally-recognized qualifications that will allow you to set up a job here.
Common teaching conditions
Teachers typically have 25 contact hours each week and the students tend to be friendly and enthusiastic. You’ll often be teaching young kids from the age of 7 upwards, so i-to-i’s Teaching English to Young Learners specialist certificate will be very useful.

Be aware…

Like most places, Portugal has its share of crime, but worst you’re likely to suffer is to have your pocket picked.
