Schools are so desperate for teachers that it’s often possible to arrange a job before you leave home. The problem is that few schools advertise or have websites. Of those that do, you could try Oxford Language Center or the Association of Christian Schools International.
Can I find work while in-country?
This is probably the best option. There are several language schools in and around Guatemala City, and if you hit the road and travel the country, you’ll find opportunities in smaller towns. However, the pay outside of the capital won’t be great.
What is the usual hiring process?
If you’re applying from home, you’ll usually be interviewed over the phone. If you wait until you arrive, simply go into schools with your CV and they’ll arrange an interview in-person.
Is a work visa required to find paid work?
Yes. You will need a one-year Resident Visa and Work Permit. However, controls are lax and it’s quite common for teachers to look for work on a tourist visa, and then apply for a work permit once they have found a job.
Work visa requirements:
Solid job offer and declaration of responsibility from employer
Resume/CV translated into Spanish
Police record of good conduct from your home country
Certificate from your country’s passport authority confirming your passport’s validity
