Summary
Demand for English teachers is very high here, but most positions are on a voluntary basis
Main TEFL regions
Guatemala City, Antigua, Quetzaltenango
Types of teaching
Private language schools: General English, Business English
English-medium schools: General English, English for Young Learners
Accommodation
As many positions are effectively voluntary, you will often be able to give lessons in exchange for accommodation and food. Otherwise, you’ll probably have to stay in a hostel, which starts at about $5 for a basic room.
Flight reimbursement
Not common
Salary
If you can find a paid job, you’ll earn about US$10-18 per hour.
Taxes
On a typical teacher’s salary, you’ll pay about 17% of your salary as income tax.
Cost of living
Like the rest of Central America, the cost of living is low. A cheap meal will cost you as little as US$2, as will a beer in a bar, while an hour-long bus ride costs less than a dollar.
Potential to save money
Although costs are low, you’re unlikely to able to save any money. But teachers come here for the rewarding experience rather than the money!
How much TEFL training is recommended?
You can get by without any TEFL training at all, but you’d be doing a disservice to yourself and your students. An accredited course such as those offered by i-to-i will make your lessons far more effective.
Common teaching conditions
Full-time positions involve about 25 contact hours per week. Resources vary from good to almost non-existent, so it’s best to be prepared. i-to-i’s Teaching with Limited Resources Specialist Certificate will stand you in good stead.

Be aware…

Crime can be a problem, so don’t walk around the cities late at night and avoid stopping at deserted places when you’re travelling around the country.
