Teach English in Austria

Work & Visas

How do I find work?
The Fullbright Commission and the British Council arrange teaching assistant jobs in Austrian schools. Alternatively, you can get some language schools’ contact details from Austria’s Yellow Pages website.
Can I find work while in-country?
As most jobs are on a freelance basis, this is the best option. Simply look in the Yellow Pages or ask around once you arrive.
What is the usual hiring process?
Some schools arrange face-to-face interviews in the UK and USA, but most prefer you to travel to Austria first. As you’ll probably be teaching businesspeople, it’s important to look professional.
Is a work visa required to find paid work?
EU nationals can work here without a visa, so they’re much preferred by Austrian employers. You will, however, have to go register with the police and tax department, and set up a bank account.
Non-EU citizens will find it very difficult to get a visa unless they arrange their job through the British Council or Fulbright Commission.
Work visa requirements:
  • Job offer
  • valid passport
