Student Motivation, Teacher Roles & EFL Methodology (2-3 hrs approx)

An introduction to teaching EFL

Motivation

  • Learn different ways students are motivated to learn English such as; passing an exam, getting a better paid job or aiding integration into an English-speaking country.
  • Learn how to generate a questionnaire to find out what motivates your students to learn English as well as their general needs.

Teacher Roles

  • Motivator
  • Controller - being in complete control of the class
  • Assessor - checking and deciding when and how to give feedback
  • Resource - you may be the only exposure to the language that the learner has
  • Coach - to encourage students to actively take part in classroom activities
  • Tutor - on a one-to-one basis, giving individual attention, guidance and helping students to learn more efficiently
  • Organiser - to tell students exactly what they need to do, and how they should do it
  • Facilitator - to encourage students to communicate with each other
  • Counsellor - to help the student solve any problems relating to language learning

EFL Methodology

An introduction to many different teaching techniques. There is no "best" way to teach so this course introduces you to a variety of ways enabling you to generate your own style.

Tasks

  • 3 mini-tasks (not submitted to tutor)
  • 3 written tasks of 50, 75 and 150 words submitted automatically to your tutor and returned to you marked within 24 hours (Monday to Friday)
