Module Eight
How to teach Reading and Listening skills (4-5 hrs approx)
Find out what's needed for productive reading and listening lessons using various media such as tapes, texts and recorded songs.
Listening
- Real-life listening situations. For example, pronunciation - words are often pronounced differently from how they are written, e.g. "I'm going to..." becomes "I'm gonna..."
- Stages in a listening and reading lesson. For example, the lesson should progress from overall understanding to detailed understanding
- Different types of listening tasks such as filling in a timetable or chart, or answering true/false questions or statements
- How to incorporate songs into listening lessons
Reading
- Ideas for reading follow-up activities, for example, discussion/debate based on themes from the text
- Additional activities for using with songs or texts before, during or after students listen to the song or read the text. For example:
- Before - students brainstorm vocabulary which might be associated with the topic
- During - cut and mix the lines of the text and students order the jumbled sentences
- After - students write a reply to the author/singer

- Three mini-task (not submitted to tutor)
- Three tasks submitted automatically to tutor and returned to you marked within 24 hours (Monday to Friday):
