Teaching Business English
Modern technology is moving at a rapid pace and communication is becoming easier everyday.
The internet has made it easy for people to communicate across vast distances and this has had a significant impact on the global business economy. This, in turn, has caused an increase in demand for TEFL tutors as men and women around the world begin to realise that the English language is now an essential tool in the business world.
English is the most widely used language in the world and this makes it an invaluable skill which businesses are only now beginning to recognise for it's full potential. The fact is that the English language won't just be used when speaking to native speakers, but will also be used as a common language between non-native speakers. English has become the "Lingua franca" for the business world as we know it.
For many students, learning English to be used in a business capacity is one of the most practical ways to advance themselves and their communities. For some of these students, business is the bridge between their world and a better way of life.
As a native speaker, you may not notice some of the subtle differences used in business English compared to what you might say in a less formal environment. In fact, these differences not only contain certain customs and courtesies, but an entire world of vocabulary which is rarely used in everyday speech.
It's not often that we find ourselves saying "invoice" or "negotiations" in everyday speech with our peers. But, words like these and others can be integral to successful business exchanges. Business greetings are not only customary in professional settings, but are a part of many formal cultural settings.
Writing in professional English can be seen in the form of CV's, complaints, business letters and lesson plans to name a few, but it's effects are far wider reaching. Business English is absolutely necessary to the daily function and performance of thousands of businesses around the globe. Business English is the symbolic lifeline of the proverbial "Global Village" of commerce.
One enticing aspect of teaching business English for some teachers is the prospect of working with adults, who may already have some grasp of English. Helping these students with practical English applications is seeing your work manifest itself before your eyes.
