Greece's Lucrative Private Market

Greece is not one of the better known TEFL markets but it is certainly one of the best.

It offers a vast array of teaching positions in both schools and language institutes across the country but it is the opportunity to become a private tutor which really puts it on the map.

Many TEFL teachers supplement their salaries with private teaching work and after a little time, sourcing out clients and building a reputation for yourself, it is often possible to pursue a career as a private tutor without the support network of a permanent position. Most teachers find it beneficial to begin in such a position because it allows them to prove their abilities to potential clients and to begin building a client base.

Finding your first students can be a difficult process, especially if you decide not to begin in a full-time position, but once you have developed successful working relationships with these first few you will find that more follow. Impressing parents is important because it is their talk at the school gates that will bring clients to your doorstep.

You will need to bear in mind that teaching private lessons is very different from teaching a class. You will need to meet the individual needs of your students and each will be different. Some will want help tailoring their skills towards the business environment, others will need help with grammar and yet more will need conversational English practice. You will be working with a diverse range of students, teaching a diverse range of skills and this will make it both interesting and challenging.

But what really makes private tuition in Greece irresistible is the opportunity to earn, not just the cash you need to travel, but enough to keep you travelling long after you've finished teaching. This is a country where teaching can be a profitable business and a TEFL course is all you need to get your foot in the door.
