Shelley Steedman
Our face-to-face TEFL tutor in Perth is Shelley Steedman, who has experience teaching English as a Foreign Language in the Czech Republic, Oman and Vietnam. During her time in Europe, Shelley worked with both small and large companies to improve their English speaking levels, and she is a big advocate for teaching English abroad! Now back in Western Australia, as well as tutoring at our Weekend TEFL courses, Shelley teaches English as a second language to international students at Curtin University. She's also developed a series of English classes for Arabic women through cooking!
We asked Shelley why she decided to teach English overseas:
I worked in medico legal and ran my own catering business, but decided that they were both not ideal professions for travelling. My husband wanted to travel and teach English (he was already qualified) - I did a TEFL course 7 years ago and just adored the entire experience of teaching other cultures. I then made a career switch and here I am!
At the i-to-i Weekend TEFL course I enjoy meeting people who want to go and work ‘outside the square’, or travel and help in some way. I also feel that it is a privilege to share and teach knowledge, and I really love that part of the course.
I always recommend to first-time English language teachers that when you give a lesson you should always be yourself! Remember that learning is life long and that your teaching journey is just beginning.
