I took my CELTA course straight after doing my degree. Like many people, my initial reason for doing my TEFL qualification was to enable me to travel the world. I didn’t want to just go on holiday, I wanted to live in a country and immerse myself in the culture.

My teaching experience

I have over 4 years teaching experience and I have taught in Japan, Italy, Egypt and Portugal. At first teaching was daunting, however I grew to love it! Despite having a BA in English, I discovered I didn’t really know a lot about English as a language – but that soon changes! TEFL is very diverse, challenging, rewarding and you get to be creative with your lessons. You never stop learning how to better yourself and your methods!

My tips for new teachers?

Another teacher once said to me that the best teachers are those who have a good rapport with their class and make them laugh. Whilst I don’t think this is the only thing, I do think it’s important. If your students like you and feel comfortable in class it goes a long way. Confidence is a key factor too. Don’t worry if you do something wrong – just laugh it off! Your students will forgive you! And most importantly, wherever your first job is, make the most of the experience around you. TEFL teachers love sharing ideas – I’ve learnt so much from my colleagues!
