1. Course Requirements
In order for tutees to successfully complete an i-to-i course, all candidates must demonstrate the following requirements:
- An awareness of the basic concepts of language teaching
- A native-level of English language and knowledge of English language materials
- An ability to take advice from both tutors and peers, and the capability to improve as a result.
All tutees should be aware that subscription to any i-to-i course does not automatically lead to successful completion of the course. Should a tutee fail to reach the required standards, we reserve the right to fail that tutee.
2. English Language Level of the Tutee
Before the Course
All non-native English-speaking tutees should have at least the Cambridge Certificate in Advanced English (CAE) or equivalent, in order to enrol onto an i-to-i course. If unsure of the required native English level, tutees are advised to call their nearest i-to-i office and to discuss requirements with a member of staff.
During the Course
Should at any point during the course a tutor feel that a tutee’s English language ability is insufficient, their case will immediately be forwarded to the Director of Studies or the Head of Operations. If both the tutor and the Director of Studies/TEFL Manager believe the tutee unfit to competently teach EFL, we reserve the right to fail the tutee.
3. Our Commitment
i-to-i is committed to providing you with the very best level of service and satisfaction with your training. This is our commitment and promise to you when you sign up for an i-to-i course.
i-to-i promises to:
- Provide a response to your queries or assignment submissions within 48-hours, Monday to Friday (2 working days).
- Provide access to the appropriate course content within one working day of i-to-i receiving your application (Online Courses only).
- Operate an equal opportunities policy.
- Deal with any difficulties you may have with the course promptly and fairly within 48 hours between Monday to Friday. E-mail the helpdesk@tefl-training.com with any troubles you may have.
- Provide access, during the course, to the appropriate expertise and support from our tutors and i-to-i support team.
- Provide constructive, individual feedback on your progress
- We will provide you with a full refund within 7 days if we withdraw the course you are enrolled on, if we fail to contact you after your booking of a course, or if we fail to return correspondence in a timely manner (with 2 working days). Failure to contact you cannot be a result of an incorrect e-mail address you’ve provided or one that does not support attachments.
If we break any of these promises, to claim a refund of your course cost, you need to provide evidence either in writing or by email, within seven days of the promise first being broken to helpdesk@tefl-training.com.
4. Failure to Complete Within Three Months
All tutees are given 3 months in which to complete the Online TEFL Course, the Grammar Awareness Course and Specialist Certificates and are strongly encouraged to complete their training within three months.
Your study time begins from the time of purchase of your course. In cases where there is a significant time period between the student's submissions of their assignments, we may, at the discretion of the Director of Studies, ask the student to submit earlier work for reappraisal.
If a tutee fails to complete the course within 3 months, they may extend their study-time by 1 or 3 months for an administration fee:
- 1 month (30 days) - £50 / US$75 / CA$75 / €75 / AUS$125 / NZ$140
- 3 months (90 days) - £100 / US$150 / CA$150 / €150 / AU$250 / NZ$280
Tutees may extend their course more than once and at any point during their course or after the course has expired.
5. Failure of Course
Online TEFL Courses and Specialist TEFL Courses
Tutees are given unlimited attempts to complete each auto-marked assessment (a 'quiz') in the Online TEFL Course. Tutees are given three attempts to complete each tutor-marked assessment (a 'checkpoint' or 'assignment') in the Online TEFL Course. If on the third attempt, the tutee has failed to take the tutor’s suggestions, comments and advice on board and has still not achieved the level deemed acceptable by the tutor, then the tutee’s final submission will be forwarded on to the Director of Studies.
The Director of Studies will then submit the final submission to another tutor (who has not yet marked any of the tutees attempts for that assignment) for verification. Should the second tutor be unsatisfied with the submission, the Director of Studies has the right to fail the tutee.
No refunds are possible in cases whereby the tutee has been deemed to have failed the course.
Grammar Awareness Course
Tutees are given unlimited attempts to complete each of the assessments (called a ‘quiz’) in each module of the Grammar Awareness Course. However i-to-i reserve the right to fail a tutee should they fail to demonstrate when required a level of English grammar knowledge suitable for the progress they have achieved in the Grammar Awareness Course, and/or where excessive attempts have been made on each assessment.
No refunds are possible in cases whereby the tutee has been deemed to have failed the course.
Classroom TEFL Courses
Attendance at the course does not guarantee that the tutee will pass the course. However, failure to be present for the full duration of the course will result in failure of the course.
If, in the professional opinion of the tutor, the tutee does not reach the required level in the following areas the tutee may fail the course:
- An awareness of the basic concepts of language teaching
- A native-level of English language and knowledge of English language materials
- An ability to plan lessons with and without aid of course books, to include ‘Presentation, Production and Practice’ activities.
- An awareness of classroom management
- An ability to take advice from both tutors and peers, and the capability to improve as a result.
- Failure to abide by the i-to-i code of conduct
If the tutee fails the course they are entitled to ask for and be given reasons for this failure. All failed tutees will receive a written letter informing them of the reasons why they have not passed within 14 days of the end of the course date.
No refunds are possible in cases whereby the tutee has failed the course, and we reserve the right to not accept failed tutees on subsequent courses where this has been result of failing to abide by the code of conduct outlined below.
Code of Conduct
i-to-i expects TEFL tutees to abstain from destructive, distracting, or disrespectful behaviour during their TEFL courses. The below outlines the code of conduct we expect during your course. Failure to abide by the below will result in immediate failure and removal from your course:
- i-to-i has a zero tolerance policy any use of intoxicants during courses or in possession of illegal substances. If you are under the influence or in possession of such substances, you will be removed from the course immediately and fail.
- You are expected to abide by all the rules of the venue at which your Classroom TEFL Course is held.
- Treat your Online TEFL Course tutor and/or your Classroom TEFL Course tutor with courtesy and respect.
6. Certificates
Every endeavour is made to ensure that certificates reach the successful tutee within 28 days of completion of all of your course components. i-to-i, however, cannot be responsible for certificates that are not received due to postal issues. If you have not received your certificate within 28 days of passing your course, please contact your nearest i-to-i office for assistance.
All tutees can request a new certificate to replace a lost certificate for the administrative fee of £15 / US$20 / CA$20 / €15 / AU$25 / NZ$28. This fee includes standard postage and packaging. If the tutee requires alternative postal arrangements, this will solely be at the cost of the tutee, and is subject to availability.
7. ‘Cooling-Off’ Period
Online TEFL Courses, Grammar Awareness Course and Specialist Certificates
If for any reason you are not satisfied with the course you have purchased, you are entitled to a full refund within 7 days of booking.
If you do cancel the course, any access to course materials (downloads or other) will be removed from your log-in and any gift vouchers will be cancelled.
Classroom TEFL Courses
If for any reason you are not satisfied with the Classroom TEFL Course you have purchased, you are entitled to a full refund within seven days from the date you made the purchase of the course, unless this is within 7 days of the start date of the course. In this case no refund is possible.
If you do cancel the course, any access to course materials (downloads or other) will be removed from your log-in and any gift vouchers will be cancelled.
If you are not satisfied with the course during the first day of the weekend classroom course, you must speak to the tutor on the day. If your problem cannot be resolved, you should contact our support team on the Monday morning following the course who will endevour to resolve your query.
8. Cancellation of a Classroom TEFL Course by i-to-i
Classroom TEFL Courses run effectively when the minimum number of tutees is present. In the unlikely event that the course doesn’t reach its minimal requirement, we reserve the right to cancel the course and transfer participants to a suitable alternative course. If this unlikely event occurred, you would be eligible for a refund or a free transfer to an alternative Classroom TEFL Course date. i-to-i cannot be held responsible for any non-refundable travel costs that have been incurred by the tutee to attend a Classroom TEFL Course that has been cancelled by i-to-i.
9. Plagiarism
If a tutee is suspected of plagiarism by their tutor, they will be issued with a formal warning. If the plagiarism continues it will be referred to the Director of Studies who is empowered to dismiss the tutee from the course. In such cases no refunds will be given.

Please note that, whilst i-to-i has worked hard to choose Overseas Partners whom we believe can find work for the majority of our customers, it is the decision of the Overseas Partner, not i-to-i as to whether your application is accepted, and i-to-i cannot influence or change the requirements of the English teaching job market in the destination country, nor can it override the decision of the Overseas Partner. The Overseas Partner’s decision is final, and i-to-i cannot challenge or insist on being given reasons for any rejection of an application on your behalf.
2.4. Provided that your application meets i-to-i’s requirements as notified to you and you have submitted all required documentation to us within the specified number of days from the time of booking, i-to-i will pass your details on to our Overseas Partner. If your initial application is rejected, you can choose whether to ask i-to-i to submit your application to a different Overseas Partner in a different country. If your application is accepted, our Overseas Partner will provide you with the details of your role before your arrival in country. Some schools or institutes will also provide accommodation; others will require you to make your own accommodation arrangements.
2.5. Once you have entered into a Teaching Contract the Overseas Partner will provide you with relevant pre-departure preparation, including details of airport pick-up (where provided), and details of your accommodation, where this is to be provided by your school or institute under the Teaching Contract.
2.6. We shall procure that the Overseas Partner, acting on behalf of i-to-i will provide airport pick-up where possible, provided that you have forwarded your flight details to the Overseas Partner at least 7 days before departure.
2.7. We shall procure that the Overseas Partner, acting on behalf of i-to-i , will provide a reasonable amount of on-going support whilst you are in country if you experience problems with your accommodation or job. You accept that the Overseas Partner will have complete discretion as to how best to help you resolve any problems and how much time it can spend working with you on the problem, and i-to-i cannot override or interfere with the decisions made by the Overseas Partner in relation to the problems you are experiencing, nor is it responsible for those decisions. The Overseas Partner cannot provide support in relation to employment or accommodation problems unless you notify the Overseas Partner as soon as the problems arise (and in any event before leaving the job or accommodation) and you have made reasonable attempts to resolve the problems directly with your employer.
2.8. Documents must be scanned and emailed to tefljobteam@i-to-i.com within the specified number of days from the time of booking. If documents have not been sent and received by the TEFL Job Team, the placement will be automatically cancelled. You can reinstate your placement by contacting tefljobteam@i-to-i.com. You must reinstate your placement within six months of booking. If you do not re-instate your placement within six months from the date of your booking, an administration fee will apply.
3. Relationship with the Overseas Partner
3.1. In this i-to-i Contract, i-to-i sub-contracts those aspects of its service that are carried out in the destination country to an Overseas Partner on the basis set out in Clause 2 above.
3.2. Our Overseas Partner may, in turn, be acting as the agent for various English language institutes and schools in the destination country or it may itself be an institute or school. If the Overseas Partner accepts your application, it will introduce you to an institute or school, (or, where the Overseas Partner is itself a school, will offer you employment in that school).
4. The Teaching Contract
Before you start work at your school or institute, you will be required to enter into a Teaching Contract direct with an institute or school. Your Teaching Contract is not with i-to-i, and we cannot negotiate or challenge any terms in it on your behalf. You are encouraged to take independent advice from an advisor with expertise in the law of the destination country about any concerns you may have about the terms in the Teaching Contract. This will be at your own cost. Your Teaching Contract will be in a language that you understand.
If you are not prepared to accept any and all stipulations within the Teaching Contract, and subsequently end your teaching role, you alone are responsible for this decision. We shall procure that our Overseas Partner will send you the Teaching Contract before your departure.
5. Amendments
5.1. Provided that your application meets the requirements as notified to you and you have submitted all required documentation to us, i-to-i will offer you the option to amend to another country if you are unsuccessful in your application for your initial Teaching Contract.
5.2. If you wish to make a change to your start month or destination, i-to-i will do its best to ensure that this is possible. Upon application you are required to specify a starting month for the arrival in country.
5.3. You may cancel your TEFL Job abroad application at any time. Please note that you will be bound by the terms in the Teaching Contract you sign on acceptance of your position.
6. Some guidance for dealing with problems in-country
6.1. i-to-i is not a party to the Teaching Contract. It will not be liable for the school or institute's compliance with its terms or for any aspect of those terms that you might consider unreasonable. You should read through your Teaching Contract carefully and take local legal advice if you wish to do so. You should also note the following expectations that we believe your school will have of you, whether or not these are mentioned in the Teaching Contract, in order to reduce the likelihood of having problems in the course of your employment:
6.2. You will be expected to take care of and be responsible for any materials provided for your use by your school. Your school is likely to hold you financially responsible for any damage or loss caused to such materials. Our Overseas Partner will not be able to help you avoid this responsibility, which may be imposed in the form of loss of wages.
6.3. Your accommodation owner is likely to hold you financially responsible for any damage to your accommodation caused by you or somebody who is in your accommodation with your permission. Our Overseas Partner will not be able to help you avoid this responsibility.
6.4. You will be expected to dress and behave appropriately and professionally for interviews and work in accordance with cultural norms in the destination country which may be very different from those in your home country. Our Overseas Partner will not be able to help you if you lose your job because you refuse to comply with your school's expectations in relation to style of dress or hair or personal adornment.
7. Travel - Related Matters
7.1. It is your responsibility to book and pay for your flights, and to arrive in good time for your flight. We advise you refrain from booking your flights until you have signed your Teaching Contract.
7.2. Travel Insurance: It is your responsibility to obtain appropriate travel and medical insurance. We recommend strongly that you take out a comprehensive travel insurance policy that covers you also for working overseas.
7.3. Visas: Whilst we can assist in giving you general advice about visa for your travels, you are responsible for obtaining the correct entry and work visas for your destination. You are also responsible for the cost of obtaining any visas.
7.4. Travel Documentation: It is your responsibility to ensure that you have a valid passport that will remain valid for the duration of your stay in country.
7.5. Medical Advice: It is your responsibility to ensure that you have taken appropriate medical advice from your doctor in respect of living and working in the destination country, and that you have received all the appropriate inoculations and injections. It is also your responsibility to ensure that you take with you any appropriate and/or necessary medication or medical equipment for both treatment and prevention of illnesses during your time overseas.
7.6. Security and Government Advice: It is your responsibility to clarify information in relation to the political and security situation and any relevant medical advice in respect of the destination country, and to take any relevant steps that you feel are appropriate.
8. Accuracy of Marketing Materials
We believe that all statements made in our brochure, website and other marketing materials are factual and correct at the time they are made. Every reasonable effort has been made to describe the placement and to provide the amenities described. We cannot be held responsible for any changes that become known or happen after the brochure was produced (up-to-date information can be found on the website). Nor can we accept liability for happenings outside our reasonable control. We undertake to advise you of any material changes known to us prior to your departure providing there is sufficient time to do so and we can contact you.
9. The Law and your Protection
9.1. When agreeing to these terms and conditions, both parties recognise that you are not an employee of i-to-i , nor of any other company in i-to-i's group.
9.2. Nothing in these conditions is intended to exclude or limit our liability to you for fraud or for death or personal injury caused by any act or omission by us or our employees (providing they were at the time acting within the course of their employment).
9.3. Neither we nor our agents accept liability for any aspect of your Teaching Contract.
9.4. We hereby exclude any liability we might otherwise have if part of this contract is improperly performed due to your error or omissions in the information and personal details which you have provided to us.
9.5. Neither we nor our Overseas Partner accept liability, and we will not pay you any compensation, in the event that your trip is cancelled, delayed, curtailed or in any way changed or where the performance or prompt performance of this contract is prevented as a result of circumstances that we, our representatives, our Overseas Partner, or their representatives could not, even with all due care, foresee or avoid. Such circumstances include (without limitation) war or threat of war, terrorist activity or threat of such activity, riots or civil disturbance, industrial action, natural or nuclear disaster, fire, adverse weather conditions, health risks and epidemics and all similar circumstances beyond our control.
9.6. i-to-i works hard to select Overseas Partners and schools that operate to the highest standards available locally, but neither it nor the Overseas Partners will accept any liability to you arising from a difference in regulation of employee protection, discrimination laws, health and safety practice or other matters between the destination country and your home country.
9.7. We will use all reasonable skill and care in providing our services to you in accordance with these terms. Neither we nor any company within i-to-i’s group will be liable for what schools or institutes do or do not do (save insofar as the school or institute is an Overseas Partner acting in the course of providing the services set out in Clause 2) or for any loss, damage, expense or other claim of any description which you suffer in connection with your employment. Our Overseas Partners are engaged by i-to-i to undertake certain duties. However, they and their staff are not employees of i-to-i , and as such, we cannot ultimately exercise direct control over them or be responsible for their actions.
9.8. Under no circumstances will we or our Overseas Agent be liable for any indirect, economic or consequential loss that you suffer. Please note in particular that we will not be responsible for loss of earnings if your job starts later, finishes sooner, is on different terms or otherwise differs from its description in your Teaching Contract.
9.9. If, on arrival at your destination, you learn that the job arranged for you is no longer available through no fault of your own, then we will endeavour to arrange employment in another school in the same country. If that is not possible, reimburse your reasonable costs of changing your return airline ticket. Save as otherwise provided for in this agreement, we shall have no liability in respect of the cancellation or unavailability of your Teaching Contract.
9.10. Except in the case of fraud or death or personal injury resulting from any act or omission by i-to-i or any of its employees, the maximum liability of i-to-i or any company within the i-to-i group to you under these additional terms shall be capped at £1000.
10. Complaints

11. Use of photos and comments
By agreeing to these terms and conditions you agree that we may use any photo(s)/image(s) we or someone on our behalf takes of you or any comments (written or verbal) you make during or in connection with your placement for our promotional/marketing purposes (such as including them in our brochure / website) without obtaining your further specific permission or making any payment to you. I have read, understood and agree to the Terms and Conditions covering the Job Placement Service and am fully aware that my employment contract in the destination country will be with the school or institute or with our agent and not with i-to-i or any other company in i-to-i's group.
